When King Ezana of Ethiopia embraced Christianity in the 4th century, it set off a chain reaction that would transform the entire nation. This top-down conversion had its strengths and weaknesses. On one hand, the endorsement of Christianity by a powerful monarch lent the faith a sense of legitimacy and authority. On the other, it risked creating a superficial adherence to the new religion, with people converting out of allegiance to the king rather than personal conviction.
