Part Five: Reflection on Ruth, Esther, and Identity
by Fr. Matthew Hawkins
Ruth and Esther
The stories of Ruth and Esther from the Old Testament offer powerful insights into the role of identity in shaping our lives. Ruth, a Moabite woman, embraces a new identity as part of the Israelite community, showing us how our choices can shape our sense of belonging. On the other hand, Esther, a Jewish woman who becomes queen of Persia, teaches us about the strategic nature of embracing our identity at the right time and in the right way. Both stories remind us that identity is not fixed, but rather a dynamic force that can profoundly impact our lives. Ruth’s story is one of transformation and acceptance. As an outsider who marries into an Israelite family, Ruth faces the choice of returning to her own people or staying with her mother-in-law, Naomi, in Israel. Her decision to stay and embrace a new cultural and religious identity is a profound act of loyalty and marks a turning point in her life. Ruth’s willingness to adopt a new identity leads to acceptance in the Israelite community and ultimately plays a role in shaping the lineage of King David. Her journey teaches us that identity is not static – it can evolve based on the choices we make and the commitments we embrace.
Esther’s story, on the other hand, revolves around the concealment and revelation of her Jewish identity. As queen of Persia, Esther keeps her heritage a secret, but when a plot to annihilate the Jewish people is revealed, she faces a pivotal decision – to continue hiding her identity or to reveal it and plead for their survival. Esther’s courageous choice to reveal her true identity at a critical moment not only saves her people but also underscores the importance of embracing who we truly are, even when it comes with significant risk.
These two stories offer complementary lessons about the fluidity and power of identity. Ruth’s journey teaches us about the transformative potential of embracing a new identity, showing how loyalty and commitment can lead to belonging and fulfillment in unexpected places. On the other hand, Esther’s story underscores the strategic importance of timing in revealing our true identity. Her experience reminds us that there are times when our identity must be shielded for safety, but there are also critical moments when it must be embraced for the greater good.
In today’s world, where discussions about identity, belonging, and self-realization are increasingly important, the stories of Ruth and Esther continue to resonate. They remind us that our identities are not fixed – they can be influenced by the choices we make and the circumstances we find ourselves in. Whether it’s embracing a new identity or rededicating oneself to an older one, the stories of Ruth and Esther encourage us to reflect on the complexity and power of our own identities today.
